What Men Should do - 5 things

Guest Blogpost by Laird Bramich:

For those that aren’t familiar with my often described as ‘aggressive prepossessions’, I’m going to run through a few things what men should do so we’re all on the same page here.

These dot points will serve to nicely contextualise the following 743 words:

  • My loyalties do not lay with ‘off the shelf’ companies. Nope, as far as I’m concerned, the name on a tag comes a very distant second to fitment.
  • I’ll blow my stack if I hear the following reasons for buying clothes, ”I got it for a good price” or “It’s comfortable”.. If comfort was a justifiable reason for wearing clothes, imagine the aesthetic bedlam. And if you can’t, think onesie parties….
  • Don’t make the mistake of confusing ‘fashion’ for a style. The style is a timeless class, fashion is 14 small men wearing an aggregate of 319 turtle-neck sweaters. Disaster

So now that’s out of the way, let’s move forward, shall we?

The question I was asked to write about today was quite a fascinating topic; what men should do and quite challenging as it turned out.

I was asked to write about the top 5 things I consider when pulling together an outfit.

Simple on the face of it, but quite the beast once delved into. (Much like mini-golf if you tend to dabble in the short game like myself).

Jacket Fitment

Jacket and Tie Fitment

We are going to talk about jacket fitment in a second, but look at those two prime examples of everything being wrong - especially ties!

Now, Jacket fitment is, in my opinion, the biggest factor in creating a great first impression.

Here is why...

Ensure shoulders expand to the end of your natural shoulders and no further.

Ensure the arm drops cleanly from the shoulder and doesn’t pivot at the shoulder head. That is a sign that the armhole is too tight for your body and is, therefore, stretching the shoulder head material horizontally.

The sleeve length should drop just in front of the wrist allowing for 1-2cm’s of shirt cuff to be seen.

Ensure that the waist is tight enough to only fit a single clenched fist between your stomach and jacket, but not so tight that the jacket pulls across the front when the top button is fastened.

When we type bad haircut to Google, we see a lot of humiliating examples of poor choice haircuts.

If your shag is all over the place, and you’ve let that neck hair get away from you, no amount of tailoring is going to compensate for it.

One very important note here.

For those who think that hair only grew on your head!

They grow on your neck, chest, in your nose and ears.

Take care of them all.

I can’t stress enough, looking crisp at all times is more than a nice suit, you have to maintain that thing sticking out of the top of your collar too.

Great barber example is Scraggs Barber Shop on Lark Lane.

Shoes aren’t difficult to get right.

Stick to some rough guidelines and you will be all right.

Great shoes are not that expensive

Here're some guiding principles.

If you bought your shoes at a ‘back to school’ sale, or whilst there was a 2 for 1 deal, you’ve made a terrible mistake.

Additionally, if your treads look like something a ticket inspector would wear, you’ve again made a horrid mistake and need to burn them immediately.

I would prefer a public burning to warn others considering making the same mistake.

Get yourself some timeless brogues, semi-brogues, wingtips, etc. and ensure you also purchase the required equipment to look after them.

Cleaning brush, polish, etc. Additionally, a well-made pair of shoes will significantly outlive vinyl, rubber soled numbers; so I don’t want to hear about how expensive nice shoes can be.

I recently did a review of a shoe brand called Mario Bemer from Italy.

The top end of the price scale.

But are they awesome?

The elegance of a fine timepiece is immeasurable.

Think about this!

We are wearing something on us, that tells that we are living in the moment.

Only Now counts!

So why would you have that measured by something that is remotely not as good as it should?

Invest in watches.

Invest in watches

Now, the beauty of this is that you don’t have to break the bank to get a nice one.

Let’s be honest, some of the more classically branded watches that we all know have released some aesthetically horrid models.

I mean, I wouldn’t buy one of these things even if I stumbled across an uncapped credit card for crying out loud.

Do your research online and get yourself an elegant timepiece for an affordable price. Research grey market watches to see where you can pick up a real deal.

This is what men should do.

Honestly. Watch Station is pretty good.

Pocket Square

Pocket squares

Are you ready for this?

I’ve left the best till last.

The beauty of a pocket square is their ability to firmly set you apart from the ‘every-man’. Additionally, they can be as loud and flamboyant as you like, or as subdued and sophisticated as need be. For work purposes, I recommend the classic white linen crisply folded with a half inch showing from the suit jacket. This

Some folds have been discussed in our other men's fashion blog post

This mensfinest.co.uk fella sits nicely in my collection exactly for that purpose.

So there you have it.

5 things that Men Should Do:

  • Jacket Fitment
  • Haircut
  • Shoes
  • Watches
  • Pocket Square

Although there are many elements that need to be considered when constructing a crisp outfit, to my mind, these are the first five things that need to be considered.

In fact, even if you followed this five guides only, I can guarantee you’d still be in better shape than 97.9 (recurring) percent of the every-day men aimlessly strolling the streets to and from their 9-5 day job.

You’re welcome, Laird Bramich
